Rosselkhoznadzor Addresses to USDA Food Safety Inspection Service

The letter sent by Deputy Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor, Russian CVO Yevgeny Nepoklonov to FSIS Head Jane Doherty among other things says that the Rosselkhoznadzor is concerned by the increase in number of cases when dangerous poultry products are imported from the USA to Russia. This year mesopilic aerobic and facultatively anaerobic microorganisms, Salmonella, Listeria, residues of harmful and banned substances like heavy metal salts and coccidiostats have been found in such products.

The data from US Centres for Disease Control (CDC) justify the Rosselkhoznadzor’s concerns; they are indicative of the fact that low quality of the American poultry products in 2013 – 2014 caused two large human salmonellosis outbreaks in the US territory. The Rosselkhoznadzor is especially concerned by isolation of human salmonella strains highly resistant to antibiotics of different groups.

Taking into consideration the comments made based on the results of inspection of the US poultry processing plants carried out in December 2013 the Rosselkhoznadzor deems it appropriate to increase the frequency of monitoring laboratory testing of the US poultry products for the abovementioned criteria.

Besides the Rosselkhoznadzor requests the FSIS to enhance the control of animal products exported into Russia including poultry products for their compliance with the requirements and standards of the Customs Union and Russia.
