Rosselkhoznadzor Took Part in Meeting of OIE Regional Commission for Asia, Far East and Oceania

The regular meeting of the Regional Commission of the World Animal Health Organization (OIE) for Asia, Far East and Oceania was held in Sendai (Japan) on September, 2-6. The event was attended by the veterinary service representatives from 22 countries and international organizations such as the OIE, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. The Russian party was represented by Advisor to the Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Nikita Lebedev and Head of the Reference Laboratory for African Swine Fever Aleksey Igolkin (FGBI “ARRIAH”).

The meeting was focused on the issues of implementation of OIE recommendations and standards, along with control and prevention of transboundary animal diseases (African swine fever in particular).

Discussing the matter of food safety, special attention was drawn to the issue of antimicrobial resistance control. The parties concluded that the problem may get worse without technical and political support.

In the framework of the meeting the participants were familiarized with the main areas of the OIE 7th strategic plan (2021-2025), primarily focused on communication between the OIE member-countries regarding issues of human and animal migration, climate change, socio-economic aspects, as well as implementation of the system and coordinated work of reference centers for different animal diseases in the world. In this regard the Russian specialists held a number of bilateral meetings with the representatives of Asian countries (Myanmar, Mongolia, China, Vietnam etc.) on cooperation between research centers for ASF, avian influenza, foot and mouth disease, lumpy skin disease research and cooperation.

The next session of the regional commission is going to be held in Thailand in 2021.
