African Swine Fever

On November 9 a high-level conference on the control of the African swine fever spread in Europe was held in Prague (Czech Republic). The conference was attended by delegations from Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Ukraine and the European Commission. The Russian Federation was represented by Advisor to the Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Nikita Lebedev.

Annual “Workshop on laboratory diagnosis of African and classical swine fever” took place in the OIE Reference Laboratory “UCM” (Madrid, Spain). Representatives of 45 laboratories from 35 countries of the European Union, North America and Russia as well representatives of the ASF Reference Laboratory of the FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health” (FGBI “ARRIAH”) took part in the workshop.

On June 2, 2017 the meeting of Heads of veterinary services in Eastern European and Baltic countries devoted to African swine fever control in the region was held in Riga (Latvia). Commissioner for Food Health and Safety Vytenis P. Andriukaitis, representatives of the Ministries and competent authorities of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldavia and Ukraine participated in the meeting. The Russian Federation was represented by Advisor to the Head of Rosselkhoznadzor Nikita Lebedev. OIE Deputy Director General Jean-Philippe Dop and other representatives of the European Food Safety Authority also took part in the meeting.

The Standing ASF Expert Group for the Baltics and Eastern Europe under GF-TADs was established to analyze the experience and assess measures taken to control the infection. The Group’s activities are aimed at building close cooperation between ASF infected countries which will allow elaborating a joint harmonized approach to the disease eradication in the Eastern-European Region.

The delegation of specialists from the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine (CAIQ) visited the Rosselkhoznadzor subordinate FGBI “Federal Centre for Animal Health” to get acquainted with the laboratory and differential diagnostics of African swine fever (ASF), improvement of ASF diagnostic methods, as well as other issues related to the reference laboratory’s competence on ASF. The visit will last until November, 27.

The meeting of the Ministers of Agriculture and Chief Veterinary Officers (or their representatives) of Estonia, Slovakia, Romania, Belarus, Finland, Moldova, the Russian Federation and Ukraine took place in Warsaw, Poland, on October 28, 2016. The meeting was chaired by Vytenis Andriukaitis, EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety.

Making a speech at the plenary session of the European Commission devoted to measures for overcoming crisis in the EU agrarian sector, EU Commissioner Phil Hogan stated : “The Commission has and is continuing to make every effort to lift the protectionist ban imposed by Russia on pig products from the EU. Over recent months and in parallel with the WTO procedure, the Commission has made numerous efforts to convince Russia to engage in meaningful technical negotiations for an agreed solution at EU level. We also made clear that we are ready to examine any concrete proposal Russia submitted to the EU”.
